Unit 41 - 3D Environments

3D Environment Definition

What I think: A 3D environment is a place or location in a game with three dimensions in which the player can roam.

What it is: Much like our own world, this type of world allows interaction with other (networked) beings as well as manipulation of objects. They are a kind of virtual habitat.

Games Similar to my Own:

My game is derived from different points in many books I've read, but has taken inspiration from other games. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind bears the same genre as my own, namely fantasy open-world action RPG.

Its counterpart, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, has a similar narrative, that being an open world fantasy adventure RPG playthrough.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

The terrain present is rather mountainous, with a nice treeline growing in the distance. I believe the terrain is inspired by Norse and Scandinavian environments, with towering mountains, deep valleys, thick forests and large open plains. There is a cobbled pathway on the lowest part of the ground, giving us the idea of what sort of time period to expect, much older and seemingly more medieval in contrast to the tarmac roads of the modern age.

The world we see in the picture above is obviously a very fertile and lively sort of land, as evidenced by the amount of trees and plant life, alongside the short grass and seemingly moist dirt, capable of growing things. This tells us that anybody who lives here likely runs a farm to grow crops and trade, every harvest season and in a more classical way in relation to the time period which was briefly brushed upon earlier. There is a large lack of buildings, instead leaving it to a wide world, free and clear of the modern man and the destruction of nature it causes.

The closer trees have a greater amount of detail, but this is likely due to the rendering to keep performance loss at a minimum. The textures are very good, giving us an idea of how the tree might feel, with rough bark and thin leaves. We can see shadows under all the trees but they aren't very long, so we can gauge that the time is roughly midday. We can see mist in the distance surrounding the lower parts of a rather icy chain of mountains, they look fantastic even from the distance at which we view them, giving us an idea of just how huge they are.

Looking at the trees and the shapes of the mist, we can assume that they are animated to look like they are being blown around by the wind, which would indeed increase the realism instead of walking through a perfectly still environment. The shadows must also be animated, to correspond with the position of the sun and whatever other light sources are present, which can give an amazing cinematic effect during the nighttime, especially if the player holds a torch, lantern or any other form of light casting object.
